Paul: Yes, if you want to simply use the hashtag # symbol and lowercase B for sharps and flats and then adjust their baseline. But I think people prefer to use the specific flat and sharp characters for those. Control+Command+Space and search for flat or sharp to see those.
To use font-derived superscripts and subscripts:
- From the Text menu, select Show Typography .
- Enable one of the options in the Figure Position section.
To use faux superscripts and subscripts:
- From the Character panel, choose a superscript or subscript option in the Positioning and Transform section.
Affinity Publisher will always use superscript and subscript glyphs from the font if the glyphs are available. if these are not available, you can adopt faux superscripts and subscripts instead that scale and reposition the original glyphs.
I want to format a date like this: 14th may 2015. However, the th in 14 should be in superscript as is what happens when you use the “sup” tag.
You need to do something like this (see OrdinalNumbers for the full example):

In mathematics the same symbol – superscript (−1) – is used to indicate an inverse of a function and a reciprocal of a rational number. Is there a reason for using the same symbol in both cases? We analyze the responses of prospective secondary school teachers to this question. The responses are presented in a form of a dialogue between a teacher and a student and are accompanied with participants’ commentary on their choices of instructional approaches. The data show that the majority of participants treat the symbol ☐ −1 as a homonym, that is, the symbol is assigned different and unrelated meanings depending on a context. We discuss how knowledge of advanced mathematics (or lack of it) can guide instructional interaction.
