A manuscript is a handwritten work. It’s still a manuscript if it’s typed — if a publisher asks for your manuscript, don’t send her something scrawled on notebook paper!
The noun manuscript evolved from the Latin manu scriptus, meaning “written by hand.” Manu is “hand” and scriptus is “to write.” It refers to old documents actually written by hand before books were made, but it can also refer to a writer’s unpublished work whether it’s handwritten or typed. Samuel Johnson said, “Your manuscript is both good and original, but the part that is good is not original and the part that is original is not good.” Harrumph!

Definition of manuscript (Entry 2 of 2)
Manuscript language material:
The manuscript language material category is applied to items for language material in handwriting, typescript, or computer printout including printed materials completed by hand or by keyboard. At the time it is created, this material is usually intended, either implicitly or explicitly, to exist as a single instance. Examples include marked or corrected galley and page proofs, manuscript books, legal papers, and unpublished theses and dissertations.
It is important to understand which version of an article you are reading and what rights you have when you access our content. Is it the un-edited manuscript, the peer-reviewed manuscript, the final version or one that has been corrected post-publication? The following are our current definitions of the different versions of an article and apply to both subscription and gold open access articles.
Final Published Version is ‘the peer reviewed, edited, formatted and typeset version of the article, including any tagging, indexing and other enhancements published by IOP and/or its licensors’.
The AAM is the final author-created version of the manuscript, which includes any changes made after peer-review and has been accepted for publication by the journal. Documents that have been typeset or copyedited by the publisher (such as proofs or the final published version) are not AAMs, but if you wrote your article in a publisher-supplied template then that is acceptable.
If you need more details and practical tips on how to differentiate between the different article versions, please see our Journal Article Versions course on Moodle (you will need to login with Raven).
