are titles included in word count
Word count is important because it influences A) the amount of time copyeditors should spend improving your manuscript, and B) the amount of time it takes JMIR staff to typeset your article. As of February 27, 2018, fees for additional editorial work may be applied to papers which are considered excessively long (over 5000 words).

However, I am uncertain whether the chapter titles and section headings in my thesis should be included in the word count.
Another example: if all the chapter tiles and section headings in my thesis amount to 400 words, and the contents of all these chapters amount to 99,700 words, should the word count for my thesis be 101,000 words (which means I exceed the maximum length) or just 99,700 words (which means I am still safe)?
The word count is a communication about the level of detail required. It would be possible to write a short statement of 80 words, or a thesis of 80 000 words, on the same topic. The word count lets you know information such as how much detail to give, how many main points and sub points to choose, and how detailed the examples should be.

You need to count all the the text including words that are part of any graphical representations in your word count. The following items are excluded from the word count:
• abstracts
• data
• tables
• figures
• diagrams
• in-text references/citations (this means Author(s) and Date not quote itself)
• footnotes/endnotes used for reference purposes and kept within reasonable limits
• list of references and/or bibliography
• appendices
This information can be found in the Academic Regulations.
If you wish to exclude your EndNote citations from your word count, you can do this by creating a new style that hides all citations.
You can then choose this output style in EndNote, then also in Microsoft Word. As it is a blank style it will remove all citations so that you can then do your word count. We have attached an example of this called ‘Word count style’, which you can use, simply download and save to the EndNote Styles folder in your H drive.
Yes, the Latin scientific names of animals, plants, and substances are included in the word count for the title. To make sure your title fits within the given word-limit, you must frame a title that is concise and clear. You can eliminate the use of complex noun based phrases and instead use verbs to make your title short and concise. Avoid including any unnecessary detail and use only appropriate but descriptive keywords in your title. In very few words, the title of your paper must provide a brief summary of your research and engage their attention.
I want to know because this may increase the number of words within the title which should be 10-12 words only.
Do my in-text citations and reference lists get included in the Word Count for my assignment?
While different styles may give you advice for whether or not to include references in your Word Count (for example, APA recommends including everything – even the headers and footers), this is actually a matter for your markers to answer, as it is normally a decision made by the College.

To view the word count of your Turnitin assignment submission:
Turnitin uses a word counting algorithm very similar to that of Microsoft Word. The Turnitin word count:
Here is a script that does this. In Google Docs, headings are a kind of paragraph distinguished by their getHeading() attribute. There are thus 9 levels of paragraphs: title, subtitle, h1. h6, and normal.
The script first finds the level of each paragraph and the word count of each paragraph. Then, for each paragraph, it loops over all subsequent “normal” paragraphs, adding their word counts; this stops when another paragraph of equal or higher level is reached.
