The word count is a communication about the level of detail required. It would be possible to write a short statement of 80 words, or a thesis of 80 000 words, on the same topic. You need to count all the the text including words that are part of any graphical representations in your word count. The following items are excluded from the word count:
• abstracts
• data
• tables
• figures
• diagrams
• in-text references/citations (this means Author(s) and Date not quote itself)

Here is a script that does this. In Google Docs, headings are a kind of paragraph distinguished by their getHeading() attribute. There are thus 9 levels of paragraphs: title, subtitle, h1. h6, and normal.
The script first finds the level of each paragraph and the word count of each paragraph. Then, for each paragraph, it loops over all subsequent “normal” paragraphs, adding their word counts; this stops when another paragraph of equal or higher level is reached.
